| Caption: This chart shows the number of coho and chinook salmon spawners counted by the California Department of Fish and Game in index reaches of the North Fork Elk River. Salmon spawning begins in fall and continues into the winter months of the following year (i.e. 86/87 = Nov 1986 to Jan 1987). Coho salmon were the dominant salmon species in the North Fork Elk River with consistently higher returns than chinook. Counting effort may have varied considerably from year to year depending on flows; therefore, data cannot be used to estimate populations or trends of these species.
