| Caption: This chart shows the number of coho and chinook salmon spawners counted by the California Department of Fish and Game in index reaches of the South Fork Elk River. Salmon spawning begins in fall and continues into the winter months of the following year so years are labeled as spawning seasons (i.e.1986/87 = Nov. 1986-Feb. 1987). Coho salmon predominated over chinook salmon in the South Fork Elk River during the period of record. Counting effort may have varied considerably from year to year depending on flows; therefore, these data cannot be used to estimate trends for populations of these species.
