Abstract:
This dataset represents all available aerial photographs of the West Branch
of the Sheepscot River for the years 1939-40. The photographs have been scanned,
cropped, and georeferenced to allow viewing them together and in combination
with other datasets. These images were georeferenced without benefit of
systematically established control points, and so have been fit according to
the best available controls represented primarily by road crossings, bridges,
and other structures. The images will not fit perfectly with other datasets,
particularly at their margins. Locational errors may exist in images ranging
from 7 to 59 feet (2.2 to 18.0 meters).
Purpose:
The original purpose of this dataset was to identify gross planform and landuse
changes in the West Branch of the Sheepscot River as part of a geomorphological
study. The data can be used for these and related purposes, but care should be
taken to account for locational errors inherent in the data.

Process Description:
Photographs were scanned on a large-format drum scanner at a resolution of
600 dpi (dots per inch), and cropped to remove collars. They were then
georeferenced using ESRI ArcInfo 8.3 Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
The images were georeferenced without benefit of systematically established control
points, and have been fit according to the best available controls represented
primarily by road crossings, bridges, and other structures, inlcuding houses and
barns. No fewer than four, and no more than ten, control points were used to
transform each image to real-world coordinates. RMS errors resulting from each
transformation ranged from 2.2 to 18.0, with the average of the errors being 9.4.
The images will not fit perfectly with other datasets, particularly at their margins.
