Young alders of uniformly young age have established themselves on bare soil that is the toe of a landslide in the South Fork Garcia River. These trees are helping stabilize the toe of the slide. Photos provided courtesy of Craig Bell.

Alders play a very important role in shaping the stream once established. This pool on the lower North Fork Garcia is formed by scour action against mature alder roots, and the undercut bank provides ideal cover for steelhead juveniles and adults. Photo by Pat Higgins. 2/10/2003.
